Course Description

ATTENTION: LATENT PRINT EXAMINERS

This course is applicable to both veteran and novice latent print examiners. The purpose of the course is to introduce examiners to the holistic approach to friction ridge identification as presented at the Daubert Hearing in Federal Court in Philadelphia during the summer of 1999.

Quantitative-qualitative friction ridge identification has a strong basis in science. The four key areas of knowledge required to support friction ridge identification are theory, technique, standards, and conclusions. These are presented, and their application to the various issues, recently identified in court challenges, are reviewed and discussed.

Latent print examiners are instructed how to apply the theory behind friction skin uniqueness and persistency to the technique used to individualize friction ridge prints. This step by step process culminates with an opinion of an expert. Most of the identification process presented is objective in nature and is capable of being falsified, an important aspect of scientific methodology.

Each examiner participates in class and syndicate analysis using ACE-V methodology. Class participation is designed to develop a candidate’s ability and confidence when describing the various steps involved in the evaluative friction ridge identification process. The Forensic Ridgeology Course gives structure to the friction ridge identification science, promotes communication and introduces examiners to forensic report writing.

The Forensic Ridgeology Course has a testing phase where students demonstrate their knowledge of theory, technique and the ability to prepare a written analysis report.
